New Interfaces for Musical Expression

About NIME 2021

New Interfaces for Musical Expression, also known as NIME, is an international conference about musical expression and artistic performance. The conference started as a workshop in 2001 and, since then, has been held annually around the world.

NIME 2021 will be held on June 14–18, 2021 in a worldwide format (both online and at NYU Shanghai). All presentations will be available online. Attendees who can visit Shanghai will have the opportunity to participate in concerts, exhibitions, and panel discussions. NIME2021 program includes:

  • Online invited Keynote presentations by Roger Dannenberg, Yann LeCun, and AnnMarie Thomas.
  • Online social events to bring together our community of hundreds of participants from all over the world.
  • Live streaming of events from our innovative on-site day (June 17th) in Shanghai, showcasing invited presentations and demonstrations, joining our worldwide community from live venues at NYU-Shanghai’s campus.
New Interfaces for Musical Expression is a premier international conference dedicated to presenting high-impact research, artistic outcomes, and work-in-progress on new musical interface design, new technologies, and their role in musical expression and artistic performance. Researchers and musicians from all over the world will gather to share their knowledge and late-breaking work on new musical interface design and human-computer music interaction.

NIME 2021 Theme: "Learning to Play, Playing to Learn"

The study of learning has become a central topic of science in the 21st century. We encourage authors to explore topics in learning and playing (music), in keeping with the NIME 2021 theme “Learning to Play, Playing to Learn.” Authors should interpret this theme broadly, considering both machine learning and human learning, the implications and applications of learning in creating and playing new musical instruments, and the role of music and play to motivate or assist learning.
