Abstract:

Program notes: Life on (Planet) is a work for two rocks and interactive computer processing. The performer clicks and rubs the rocks together in front of a stereo microphone. The computer responds to how the rocks are played, with particular regard to changes in tempo, articulation, volume, and position of the rocks relative to the left/right stereo field of the microphone. Complex combinations of (somewhat) controllable sounds arise from the accretion of input sound combined with feedback from the space. About the performer: Holland Hopson is a composer, improviser, and electronic artist. As an instrumentalist he performs on soprano saxophone, clawhammer banjo and electronics. He has held residencies at STEIM, Amsterdam; Experimental Music Studios, Krakow and Katowice, Poland; Sonic Arts Research Studio, Vancouver, Canada; LEMURPlex, Brooklyn; and Harvestworks Digital Media Arts, New York where he developed a sound installation based on Marcel Duchamp's sculpture, With Hidden Noise. An avid phonographer, Holland has recorded sounds on four continents and in over a dozen countries. Holland's latest recording is With Hidden Noises released on Grab Rare Arts (www.grabrarearts.com).
