Examining How Musicians Create Augmented Musical Instruments

Dan Newton, and Mark T. Marshall

Proceedings of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression

Abstract:

This paper examines the creation of augmented musicalinstruments by a number of musicians. Equipped with asystem called the Augmentalist, 10 musicians created newaugmented instruments based on their traditional acousticor electric instruments. This paper discusses the ways inwhich the musicians augmented their instruments, examines the similarities and differences between the resultinginstruments and presents a number of interesting findingsresulting from this process.
