Sonifying Chemical Evolution

Steve Everett

Proceedings of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression

Abstract:

This presentation-demonstration discusses the creation of FIRST LIFE, a75-minute mixed media performance for string quartet, live audio processing, live motion capture video, and audience participation utilizing stochasticmodels of chemical data provided by Martha Grover's Research Group at theSchool of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Georgia Institute ofTechnology. Each section of this work is constructed from contingent outcomesdrawn from biochemical research exploring possible early Earth formations oforganic compounds. Audio-video excerpts of the composition will be played during the presentation.Max patches for sonification and for generating stochastic processes will bedemonstrated as well.
