Exquisite Score: A System for Collaborative Musical Composition

Daniel Manesh, and Eran Egozy

Proceedings of the International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression

Abstract:

Exquisite Score is a web application which allows users to collaborate on short musical compositions using the paradigm of the parlor game exquisite corpse. Through a MIDI-sequencer interface, composers each contribute a section to a piece of music, only seeing the very end of the preceding section. Exquisite Score is both a fun and accessible compositional game as well as a system for encouraging highly novel musical compositions. Exquisite Score was tested by several students and musicians. Several short pieces were created and a brief discussion and analysis of these pieces is included.
